Groundsperson - Job Description

The Charity is looking for a Grounds Person to join the small team who work in accordance with the Charity’s Objectives and policies to maximise the benefits of the facilities.

The primary role is to assist our Grounds Manager in preparing high quality playing surfaces primarily at Glasshouse Playing Field but also at other sites managed by Bath Recreation. The work will include preparation of various sports pitches – however, the successful candidate must have experience in preparation of cricket wickets.    The role will entail the management of the Charity’s facilities to a high standard of effectiveness of the playing surfaces and general appearance of the surrounding grounds and facilities.

Responsibilities, as directed by the Grounds Manager, will include:

Maintenance and pitch marking of grass sports pitches, including cricket, rugby, football and other sports which may include artificial sports surfaces. 

Cricket responsibilities will include the following to a high standard and in a timely manner:

  • Wicket preparation
  • Marking of sport pitches
  • Post-match running repairs
  • Square maintenance

Daily inspections of sites

Site control including providing access to users and locking up

Grass mowing/strimming

Compound and stores upkeep

Upkeep of vehicles, equipment and machinery ensuring cleanliness and health and safety standards are compliant

General ground maintenance including litter picking, border maintenance, leaf clearance

Undertaking any other reasonable duties.

The role will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity for career development in the following areas:

  • Managing and developing best practice procedures
  • Training and development in technical, health and safety and procedural aspects
  • Preparation and development of work programmes to provide continual improvement to pitch and surface standards.

Candidate Profile:

Competencies and candidate profile:

  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to contribute towards continual productivity and improvement of facilities
  • Ability to liaise and develop good working relationships with other staff members, users and contractors.
  • Flexibility and enjoyment of working outdoors
  • Good team worker, with self-motivation and ability to work on own initiative
  • Competencies in machinery and grounds maintenance will be advantageous but not mandatory
  • Basic literacy and IT skills required.

Hours of Work:

Hours will be varied, entailing longer working hours during spring/summer months but will average at 38 hours per week.   Hours of work will be set by the Grounds Manager and determined by user and weather requirements and will include some weekend working.

 Salary:         Depending on experience

Pension:        Employer contribution 5%
